Leacht in Church Island (iveragh By., Loughcurrane Ed)

Leacht

What is recorded here

A purple sandstone pillar rises one and a half metres from a low slab platform beside the church wall, marking a place where people may have gathered to remember, worship or face the danger of forgetting. The stone is large enough to touch, measure and circle, while the dead or departed remain absent from the description. Church Island gives the leacht its address, but the leacht gives back something the island cannot easily explain.
This leacht occurs close to the N wall of the church (KE098-039001-) and is a low platform of slab construction measuring 1.94m N-S x 1.75m E-W and averaging .3m high. At its centre stands a broad pillar of purple sandstone (KE098-039030-) 1.55m high, which measures .7m E-W x .45m N-S at base. See attached photograph courtesy of Amanda Clarke The above description is derived from O'Sullivan, A. and Sheehan, J. (compilers) 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University press. (1996), no. 974. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 18 June 2013
