Mains of Lauriston Cottages stand in Aberdeenshire beside the vanished shadow of Lauriston Castle. The connection between the two names suggests the castle owned the land and the cottages served the people who worked it. Stone walls and roof beams may still hold the shape of that old relationship even when the castle itself has withdrawn from sight.

Lauriston Castle was built in the late 16th century by the Keith family, a prominent Scottish noble family. It is remembered as a historic example of early Renaissance architecture in East Lothian and for its association with the influential Keith earls.
