Nine through eleven Castlegate in Lanark still stands as a nineteenth-century flat and shop, its stones unchanged since the age of steam and scramble. The numbers mark a narrow strip of working life where bedrooms sat above counters and children ran stairs worn smooth by generations of feet. That much is clear. What fills the rooms at midnight belongs to imagination, not fact.
