Lambton Castle is a Grade II registered park and garden above Chester-le-Street, built between 1820 and 1828 by John Lambton, first Earl of Durham, around an older 17th-century mansion. Its Norman-castle appearance, crenellated towers and tall boundary wall make it feel like a private kingdom overlooking the town. The family later reduced the house because of subsidence, kept the estate alive through shoots, a lion park and development plans, and the castle still stands as a marker of durable local ambition.
