Laghtaloon (Childrens Burial Gd.)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Laghtaloon is a children's burial ground on a roadside rise in County Galway, Ireland. It appeared on a 1932 survey as an unenclosed rectangular area measuring roughly 45 by 25 metres, yet grass and forgetting have since erased every visible marker. The children may have belonged to nearby farms or passed through on ancient roads, their names lost before written history reached them.
On a prominent rise, on roadside along which E boundary of td. runs. This CBG is indicated on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1932) as an unenclosed subrectangular area (N-S c. 45m, E-W c. 25m). The area is overgrown and no visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
