Ladys Well or Tobermurry

Located in a small hollow on a gentle E-facing slope and c. 40m S of a W-E road that leads to the seashore c. 350m to the E. The well is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, but according to John O'Donovan writing c. 1840, it had not been venerated for c. 40 years (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, 65). It is now a rectangular well (dims. 3m x 2.5m) defined by a concrete wall. There is no evidence of veneration. Glascarrig priory (WX017-010001-) is c. 150m to the N. The well is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and is associated with traditional Catholic devotion, particularly in coastal areas of Ireland where such sites were often centres of pilgrimage and prayer. Local tradition may have linked the well to healing or protection, common attributes of Marian holy wells.
