What is recorded here
Nobody knows which lady, when, or why she gave the water its name. The well still stands on Castle Banks in the Scottish Borders, marked as medieval on the national record. A woman may have knelt there at dawn, drinking before the village woke, or the water may have simply outlived every story told about it.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Lady's Well, Castle Banks as Holy Well (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
