Lacock Abbey, including the Oriel Window, was founded by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, in the early 13th century as a Cistercian nunnery. The abbey is significant as one of the few nunneries to survive the Dissolution of the Monasteries, later becoming a priory under Henry VIII.
