Kyme Castle was a fortified manor possibly founded by the de Kyme family in the 13th century and strengthened by the Talbot family in the 14th century. It stood east of the later hall until ruin took it in the 16th century, leaving behind a ghost of walls rather than a building. The land itself is older still, marked by Roman forts, Iron Age boundaries and a Neolithic henge, as if the castle were only the latest claim on a place long remembered for resistance.
