Knockin Castle

Castle

What is recorded here

Knockin Castle rose from a small hillock in Shropshire after Hamon le Strange received the manor of Osbaston from Henry II in 1155. The Breton knight built a lowland stronghold under William FitzAlan, turning a scattered farming settlement into the caput of the le Strange barony. He died within four years, yet the castle endured as a guardian of the volatile Welsh border, shaping Marcher history through rebellion and war.
Knockin Castle is shown as a castle on the public map of Shropshire. The saved point is the map point or the centre of its mapped shape.
Built by the de Lacy family in the 12th century, Knockin Castle was strategically important as a border fortress between England and Wales. It is remembered for its role in the medieval conflicts of the Welsh Marches and for the tragic murder of the de Lacy family within its walls in 1240.
