St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall is dedicated to St Magnus, a 12th-century Norse saint and martyr, traditionally regarded as a peacemaker who was betrayed and killed on the Orkney mainland. The cathedral, begun around 1137, is Scotland’s northernmost cathedral and reflects a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, serving as a key site in the Christianization of the Norse settlers in Orkney.
