What is recorded here

Kirkhope Tower is a medieval pele tower in the Ettrick Valley, built early in the 16th century by Walter Scott of Harden. Its narrow windows sit high above the valley, while a small ground-floor door could be barred against raiders. During the Rough Wooing, Charles Brandon’s forces burned the tower and carried off its stock. The remains of its barmkin wall still mark the place where cattle and tenants once ran for safety.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Kirkhope Tower as Tower House (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Kirkhope Tower is a medieval tower house located in the Scottish Borders, likely built in the 15th or 16th century by a local landholding family, though specific builders are not recorded. It is remembered as an example of the defensive and domestic architecture of the region during a period of frequent border conflicts.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
