Kirkhaugh Bridge abutments 1/2 mile (800m) NE of Whitley Castle

Kirkhaugh Bridge abutments stand half a mile northeast of Whitley Castle, marked as a scheduled monument in Northumberland. The exact age and builders remain unknown, but the surviving stone suggests a crossing once busy enough to warrant heavy support. Perhaps travellers crossed there at dawn, perhaps carts rumbled past in the dark. The abutments still hold the shape of that lost traffic, waiting for someone to imagine the road they once carried.
