King's Castle is an Iron Age hilltop settlement at the south-western edge of the Mendip Hills near Wells, possibly one of the earliest inhabited places beside the later city. Its linked enclosures and eastern field system suggest a busy hamlet rather than a bare military stronghold, though no excavation has opened that life. People may have herded, argued, hidden or worshipped beneath the grass, while the modern name borrowed from nearby wood misleads about their identity.
