Mud, timber and fear shaped Kilton Castle before stone ever answered the Normans. A hundred and thirty metres east of Castle Cottages, its mound and ditch still mark the place where a lord watched the northern edge of his world. The earth remembers the weight of boots, the smell of lamp smoke and the sudden knock of a siege hammer. What is missing has not stopped the castle existing; it has only removed the part that can be photographed.

The National Heritage List for England records Kilton Castle: tower keep castle 130m east of Castle Cottages as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Built by the de Kilton family in the 13th century, Kilton Castle is remembered as a significant medieval stronghold in the region and is now preserved as a scheduled monument.
