Kiln

In a pasture field overlooked by Tory Hill to the northeast. Excavated in 2006 in advance of the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford road scheme. (Excavation licence no. E2500; Area 7). The foundations of what appeared to be a simple intermittent ‘flare’ limekiln. A partially stone-lined oval pit or bowl (3.5m N-S; 3.2m E-W; D 1.4m) with rough uneven sides and a slightly concave base cut into the subsoil. An elongated oval (3m E-W; 1.8m N-S; D 1.4m) at W formed the draw-hole. A charred cereal grain recovered from reddened boulder clay returned a radiocarbon date of 1400±25BP (AD 606-664). Metalworking sites, post-holes and pits were excavated c. 120m to the NNW (KK043-087----, Kk043-088----).
