Kiln

Calluragh burial ground/An Cheallnúach: KE042-060001- is located about 1.25km E of the village of Ballyferriter on approximately the highest point in the townland with a good view to the N over Smerwick Harbour. (6) (KE042-006006-) Corn-drying kiln: The kiln lies outside the enclosure wall in the SW corner of the site. It consists of a stone-lined bowl tapering from the top, and a short passage or flue, also stone-lined and roofed, leading into the bottom of the bowl from the SW. The bowl is 1.2m in diameter at the top and 1m in depth. The flue is 1.75m long, .4m wide and .6m high, and is lined with upright slabs and roofed with horizontal slabs. The kiln, on excavation, yielded traces of firing and blackened, peaty soil. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter.
