King James IV raised Kilkerran Castle in 1490 to hold a garrison against the MacDonalds, but Alexander MacDonald, 5th of Dunnyveg, seized the place in 1536 and hung the governor from its walls while King James V watched from below. That open defiance brought Alexander to Stirling, where he died in 1538, leaving the castle ruined beside Campbeltown with a story of bloody pride still attached to its stones.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Kilkerran Castle as Castle (15th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Kilkerran Castle was built in the 15th century and is associated with the Stewart family, who were prominent in the region. It is remembered as a historic example of Scottish medieval architecture and as part of the cultural heritage of the area.
