Nine hundred and seventy unnamed famine victims sleep beneath the Kilkenny Union Workhouse site, their remains discovered in 2005 after decades of neglect. They died between August 1847 and March 1851, reduced to paupers by hunger and erased from official memory because no one bothered to record their names. The earth kept what human systems discarded, holding bodies that never received graves, markers or mourning. Their silence is not peace but failure, a debt owed by every institution that treated human life as expendable when convenient.
Herein lie the remains of 970 famine victims discovered at this Workhouse site in 2005. They were paupers of the Kilkenny Union Workhouse whose deaths occurred between August 1847 and March 1851. Their names were not recorded [...]
