Kilcreggan stands on Shore Road as the northern gate lodge to Knockderry Castle, built during the nineteenth century when grand houses still demanded formal entrances. It marks the boundary between public road and private domain, a stone threshold where carriage wheels once slowed and servants waited for orders. The lodge still performs that function, dividing outside world from castle grounds, though the masters who designed the division have long since vanished.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Kilcreggan, Shore Road, Knockderry Castle, North Lodge as Gate Lodge (19th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
