Kilcouran Grave Yard

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Kilcouran Grave Yard holds a small rectangle of death on a sun-warmed Galway slope, its modern slabs scattered without wall or gate. The living likely walked past it daily, feeding animals or gathering grass, while the dead remained buried beneath the turf. Such a place invites wonder about the people who stopped caring for it, leaving their markers to tilt and sink while the valley continued turning above them.
On a SE-facing slope in pastureland. This rectilinear burial ground (20.5m NE-SW; 15.3m NW-SE) is unenclosed. A mixture of modern upright and recumbent graveslabs are visible. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 26 March 2020
