Kilconquhar Castle began as a sixteenth-century tower for the Dunbars and Bellendens, but a 1970s fire consumed its interior before demolition erased most of its shape. The remaining walls were swallowed by a private leisure complex near Elie, hiding the castle from public roads and memory. What survived belongs to a closed estate, forcing the castle to exist only through the people who still walk past its transformed rooms.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Kilconquhar Castle as No Class (event) (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Kilconquhar Castle was built by the de Quhyll family in the 13th century and later held by the Lindsay family. It is important as a historic stronghold associated with the strategic coastal defenses of Fife and the broader history of Scottish feudalism.
