What is recorded here
Kilcolman Fort stands as a trapezoidal moated site on a hill shoulder in County Cork, its substantial earthen bank and external fosse still enclosing a space that slopes upward toward the centre. The entrance break at the east reveals a deliberate causeway across the water, while the commanding view over the Bandon river suggests the place was built to be seen and to see. Local tradition mentions two entrances and underground passages, hinting that the fort may have hidden more than its visible walls.
In pasture on shoulder of hill with commanding view to N over Bandon river and to E and S. Trapezoidal area (64m E-W; 60m max. N-S; c. 45m min. N-S) enclosed by substantial earthen bank (H 2.1m) with external fosse (D 2.2m). Break (Wth 1m) in bank with causeway across fosse at E. Possible outer bank (max. H 1m) to S, NW and N. Interior slopes up to centre. Ó Riordain (1932, 6) records tradition of two entrances to Man-made underground passages here (CO109-080----).
