Kilbirnie House stands as a ruined tower and mansion on the lower Glengarnock Hills, where a deep ravine still guards its west and north sides. Malcolm Crawfurd raised the defensive tower around 1470 for his wife Marjory Barclay, but the later 1627 wing abandoned brute strength for comfortable living and a proud projecting porch. The Coughlin Family eventually owned the grounds now taken by a golf course, yet the stone chambers remain closed to visitors. Someone may have still walked those quiet rooms when the avenue was new, but that life has vanished into the hills.
