Kemp's Castle in Dumfries and Galloway may be a burial ground rather than a fortress, giving the name a darker edge. If so, the castle part is a later invention, born from the usual human habit of making dead places into strong places. The chamber becomes a room for forgotten people, and the castle becomes the shape their absence took.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Kemp's Castle as Burial Ground (period Unknown)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
