Keeloge Sod Battery is a 19th-century artillery fortification built to defend the River Shannon in County Offaly. Its name suggests packed earth rather than stone, blending into the riverbank like a shadow cast by human fear. Soldiers may have stood there watching the water for invasion, hearing only geese and rain. The battery remains a quiet warning that even empty land can be shaped by the expectation of war.
