Kathleen Clarke was born in Limerick on 11 April 1878, the third daughter in a large Fenian family marked by prison and poverty. She married Tom Clarke in New York in 1901, then returned to Dublin where their small shop became a secret centre for republican plotting under constant police watch. When Tom and her brother Ned were executed in May 1916, she carried the loss while pregnant, exhausted by fundraising for the men they had lost.
