This grey commemorative plaque records: Behind this wall, in the grounds of the Retreat, is a Quaker burial ground with the graves of many York Friends, including Joseph Rowntree.
Joseph Rowntree was a prominent Quaker philanthropist and chocolate industrialist who significantly contributed to social reform and welfare in Britain. He is remembered for his extensive charitable work and contributions to social research through the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
A plaque record does not grant entry to a building or private land. View it from a public place unless permission is clearly given.
