This blue commemorative plaque records: The Leeds Library A proprietary subscription library founded in 1768 with Joseph Priestley as Secretary. Since 1808 it has occupied these purpose-built premises designed by Thomas Johnson. The first-floor reading room and Thomas Ambler's 'New Room' extension are amongst the architectural wonders of Leeds. Recorded plaque organisation: Leeds Civic Trust.

Dr Joseph Priestley FRS LLD, a significant figure in Enlightenment-era science and theology, served as the Secretary for the Leeds Library founded in 1768; the library itself, including its architectural highlights designed by Thomas Johnson and extended by Thomas Ambler, stands as a testament to intellectual pursuit and civic pride in Leeds.
