This black commemorative plaque records: On 11th June 1850 at this railway station in Derby, Joseph Paxton conceived his design of the Crystal Palace. Charles Fox, Derby engineer, later built it to house the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London: the first world expo.

Sir Joseph Paxton was a renowned Victorian gardener and architect who designed the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851, showcasing industrial technology and culture from around the world.
