Joseph M. Scriven was born in Banbridge, County Down, Ireland, in 1819. He later wrote the poem that became the hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” though he never sought fame for it. His life moved between love, loss, teaching and faith, and he died in Canada in 1886.
