Mud, muscle and marshalling: a circular rampart rose where the land tilted, its ditch drinking rain while fields ridged outward like the ribs of a living thing. A castle is not a tower on a page; it is a claim made visible, and claims need watchers, doors, firelight and fear. The pond beside it may have served cups, horses or kitchens, but water anywhere near a fortress is also a mirror for ambition. To walk that ground is to meet the ordinary machinery of power: food grown, boundary defended, and memory left buried beneath grass.
