Craigston Golf Course appeared in 1895 beside Cochrane Castle, marking one of Renfrewshire's earliest designed golf landscapes. The course stretched through living land where castle shadows fell across fairways, inviting players to measure skill against both distance and memory. Whether locals walked those paths before carts arrived or gathered only when invitations came, the place remained a threshold between sport and story.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Johnstone, Craigston, Cochrane Castle Golf Course as Golf Course (19th Century) (1895). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Cochrane Castle, later the site of the Johnstone, Craigston, Cochrane Castle Golf Course, was originally a medieval stronghold associated with the Cochrane family, who held it from at least the 14th century. The castle itself is now lost, but the site remains historically significant as part of the heritage of the Cochrane clan in Renfrewshire.
