This green commemorative plaque records: John Wesley preached from these steps on his first visit to Knutsford on Monday 20th March 1738. "At Knutsford all we spake to thankfully received the word of exhortation" (Wesley's journal)
John Wesley MA was a significant figure in the Methodist movement, founding the religious society that would become Methodism; his preaching at Knutsford marked an important stop on his evangelical travels, spreading his message and influencing the growth of Methodism.
