John Wesley black plaque

This black commemorative plaque records: St Thomas's Hospital Weavers Hall Built in the 15th century by Sir William Nottingham Attorney-General to Edward IV continuously occupied since then. The oldest secular building in Cirencester. John Wesley preached here in 1787.

John Wesley, a significant figure in the Methodist movement, was an Anglican cleric and theologian who, along with his brother Charles, founded Methodism; his preaching at St Thomas's Hospital Weavers Hall in 1787 reflects his extensive efforts to spread religious revival across England.
