This black commemorative plaque records: In 1777 John Wesley laid the foundation stone of the original chapel which he opened in 1779.
John Wesley MA was a leading figure in the Methodist movement, founding societies that emphasized personal faith and good works; his establishment of the chapel in 1779 furthered the spread of Methodism in Britain.
