This yellow commemorative plaque records: The Royal Brass Foundry 1717 Attributed to Sir John Vanbrugh. Following an explosion at Bagley's Foundry at Moorfields in 1716 which killed 17 people, The Board of Ordnance decided to build its own foundry at Woolwich. Sir John Vanbrugh was an English architect and dramatist known for his ornate architecture style, most famously exemplified in Blenheim Palace; he was also involved in the design of the Royal Brass Foundry at Woolwich in 1717 following a devastating explosion at another foundry.
