This stone commemorative plaque records: Near this spot on the 20th November A.D. 1214, Cardinal Langton & The Barons swore at St Edmund's altar That they would obtain from King John the ratification of Magna Charta.
King John of England was a controversial monarch whose reign saw significant conflict with his barons, leading to the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215, which limited royal power and laid foundational principles for constitutional law.
