John Smeaton, a pioneering civil engineer and founder fellow of the Royal Society, designed the Eddystone Lighthouse, renowned for its innovative use of hydraulic lime mortar that allowed it to withstand harsh marine conditions, significantly advancing lighthouse construction techniques.
