This black commemorative plaque records: Chimney Mill 1782. Designed by John Smeaton, Engineer as a five sail windmill, in use until 1892, Subsequently a golf club-house until 1975. Windshaft and cap removed 1951. Restoration begun 1976. Recorded plaque organisation: City of Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear County Council.

John Smeaton FRS (1724-1792) was a pioneering civil engineer known as the "father of civil engineering," renowned for his innovative designs including lighthouses and bridges; the Chimney Mill exemplifies his expertise in windmill construction, showcasing his ability to blend functionality with durability.
