This blue commemorative plaque records: North West Castle. When Admiral Sir John Ross returned to his native Wigtownshire from one of his attempts to discover the seafarers' dream of a north-west passage connecting the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans, he decided to build a permanent home at Stranraer. Completed in 1820, it was known in its early days as Observatory House but later was given the name which reflected the Arctic explorer's ambitions. Sir Admiral John Ross CB RN was a prominent British Arctic explorer who led expeditions in search of the Northwest Passage; his efforts significantly contributed to the geographical knowledge of the Arctic regions.
