John Marshall, Joseph Bonomi, and Temple Mill blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Temple Mill. The magnificent but highly functional flax spinning mill to your left was erected by John Marshall, founder of the Leeds Flax Industry. Joseph Bonomi modelled it and this office building (added in 1843) on the Egyptian temple at Edfu. Erected 1838-40 Recorded plaque organisation: Leeds Civic Trust.

John Marshall (1765-1845) was a pioneering industrialist who established Leeds as a major center for flax spinning, revolutionizing textile production in Britain. Joseph Bonomi (1796-1878), an Italian-born architect and archaeologist, designed Temple Mill with Egyptian Revival architecture, making it a unique landmark that reflects the eclectic tastes of the Victorian era.
