John Lombe, with his brother Thomas, established the Derby Silk Mill around 1717, considered the first factory in Britain and a key development in the Industrial Revolution. George Sorocold, a hydraulic engineer, contributed to early 18th-century industrial water power systems, including those used in Derby.
