John King left County Tyrone for Australian dirt and danger, but the small village still holds his name on a blue plaque. He lived thirty-four years, long enough to leave the kitchen table and enter history. The plaque exists because someone remembered that exploration begins in ordinary places.

John King was an Australian explorer who participated in the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition of 1860-1861, becoming one of the few survivors to return from the attempt to cross Australia from south to north.
