This blue commemorative plaque records: Leeds Grammar School Was founded in 1552 by William Sheafield, chantry priest, Leeds Parish Church. It occupied this building from 1859 to 1997. Famous pupils include: John Smeaton, engineer; G. Studdert Kennedy, 'Woodbine Willie' chaplain; John Ireland, composer; Field Marshal Lord Nicholson of Roundhay. William Sheafield founded Leeds Grammar School in 1552, establishing a long-standing educational institution in Leeds. John Smeaton, a renowned engineer known for his work on lighthouses and bridges, was educated at Leeds Grammar School. Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy, nicknamed 'Woodbine Willie' for his ministry to soldiers during World War I, also attended the school. Field Marshal Lord Nicholson of Roundhay, a distinguished military leader who served in various conflicts including World War I, was another notable alumnus of Leeds Grammar School.
