This blue commemorative plaque records: Plaque to recognise - On this site stood the Guildhall for nearly 400 years until pulled down in 1864. It was formerly the house of John Hawley (1340-1408) Fourteen times mayor, and builder of Dartmouth's first castle. He was buried under the Chancel in St. Saviour's Church where his brass lies Recorded plaque organisation: Dartmouth and Kingswear Society.
John Hawley served fourteen terms as the mayor of Dartmouth and was instrumental in building Dartmouth's first castle, significantly contributing to the town’s governance and fortification during the 14th century.
