This green commemorative plaque records: Cleveland Club 1872 On this site stood the house of John Gilbert Holmes, one of the town's first shipbuilders. The present building was designed in the French Baroque style by John Gibson for the National and Provincial Bank. John Gilbert Holmes was one of Middlesbrough's pioneering shipbuilders, crucial to the town’s industrial development in the 19th century. John Gibson, a notable architect, designed the present building in French Baroque style, originally for the National Provincial Bank, which later became a significant social hub as the Cleveland Club for local business networking.
