This blue commemorative plaque records: Gledhow Hall. in 1764 the cloth merchant Jeremiah Dixon bough the estate and hall whose remodelling soon after is attributed to John Carr. Later illustrious residents included: 1817-26 Sir John Beckett, banker, Twice Mayor of Leeds, and 1884-1911 Sir James Kitson, industrialist, MP, first Lord Mayor of Leeds. Jeremiah Dixon was an English surveyor who gained fame for his work in mapping the Mason-Dixon line between Maryland and Pennsylvania; John Carr was a prominent Yorkshire architect known for his contributions to Georgian architecture. Sir John Beckett, a banker and Twice Mayor of Leeds, significantly influenced local commerce and governance. Sir Rt Hon. Lord James Kitson PC, an industrialist and MP, played a crucial role in the development of the engineering industry and served as the first Lord Mayor of Leeds.
