This blue commemorative plaque records: 9 Church Street. This grand 18th Century Town House, much admired by Poet Laureate John Betjeman, housed the Local Council offices until they moved to the Town Hall in 1995. Nos. 3, 5 and 20 are also notable in this fine Georgian Street. Recorded plaque organisation: Crewkerne Civic Society.
Sir John Betjeman was a renowned poet laureate and influential figure in the preservation of British architecture and heritage, remembered for his poetry that often celebrated the English countryside and his efforts in saving historic buildings from demolition.
