Joe McKelvey was born in Stewartstown, County Tyrone, and became a hardline Irish Republican Army officer executed during the Irish Civil War. He helped command the Four Courts occupation in April 1922, an act that helped spark the conflict between pro-Treaty and anti-Treaty factions. His life moved from Belfast shipyards and tax offices to gunfire and a chambermaid's rope, ending on 8 December 1922.
